Python Club

Partners in Crime

The Python Club is a small, select London meeting place where the glamour of dancing gives way to private rooms of high-stakes gambling. Its importance lies in that contrast: behind imposing doors and green-baize tables, ordinary-looking banknotes become evidence in Tommy’s pursuit of the counterfeit-note network.

Setting and Character

Inspector Marriot directs Tommy’s attention to the club as a place where substantial sums change hands. The public attraction is dancing, but the rooms behind the folding doors are the real centre of its activity: two gambling rooms with green-baize-covered tables, where vast sums pass nightly. The club is therefore both a social venue and a practical setting for tracking money moving through the city.

The Counterfeit Notes

Tommy goes to the club after suspecting that Marguerite Laidlaw may be involved in distributing forged notes. When she rises to leave, she presses a quantity of small notes into his hands and asks him to exchange them for a hundred-pound note, presenting the request as a convenience because her little bag is bulging. Tommy makes the exchange, then examines the notes in a quiet corner. At least a quarter of the bundle is counterfeit, turning a suspicious connection into direct evidence that forged currency is being distributed close at hand.

The discovery does not solve the supply question. Tommy has no answer yet for where Marguerite obtained the notes, and surveillance of Laidlaw has produced no useful result. He suspects Marguerite’s father, M. Heroulade, and considers whether he might bring the notes from France concealed in a trunk with a false bottom. That remains a hypothesis rather than a conclusion; the club establishes the distribution trail, not its source.

Role in the Investigation

The Python Club makes the investigation tangible through an exchange of cash: Tommy does not merely hear that forged notes are circulating but receives a bundle and tests it himself. Its concealed gambling rooms supply a credible setting for large sums and discreet transactions, while Marguerite’s request gives Tommy an unobtrusive way to inspect the money. The scene advances the case without prematurely resolving it, separating what Tommy can prove at the club from what he still has to discover about the counterfeiters’ supply route.
